After sorting through our first chapter of material and making double sure that we had rescued everything possible, we decided to revisit the Silicon Valley office to see if we could find anything else related to Give Me Head Productions and/or the Cyberia project.
We knew there had to be more material in that cold, damp, dilapidated office because there were numerous rooms we were unable to access during our first visit.
This time we returned with a massive toolbox and, after an hour of figuring out how to bust open a sealed door, we finally entered a small office room (possibly Cassidy’s) and found a new and exciting filing cabinet staring right at us. We cracked it open like a big chestnut and scarpered with the booty.
When we arrived back at the hotel we began to organise the contents. We were over the moon to find an old VHS tape along with more photographs, a journal written in pencil and numerous documents. Our priority was finding someone who knew how to play the tape or, if it was damaged, how to restore it. At that particular point we believed that if there was anything on it, it had to be the pilot episode.
It didn’t take very long to find someone within driving distance so we jumped in our humble hire car and, after an hour on those wide open roads, a gentleman called Damien greeted us at his store which was virtually identical to our friend Roger’s store in Morecambe.
Damien tried to play the tape on an old recorder which didn’t work. He then told us that if the reel could be recovered then he would be able to recover it, but he would need a few days. We told him to take his time and to call us when he’s ready.
The next day we got that call and drove over to meet with Damien again. When we stepped out of the car, he was like an excited child, telling us how he’d been up all night salvaging as much of the reel as he possibly could.
“Wait until you see what we’ve got,” he said while blasting a vape.
The three of us went inside his store and he led us to a computer. We gathered around as he opened a desktop folder with a list of video files.
“All you need to do is click on a file,” Damien told us.
We did just that and went through them all without a pause. Then we went through them again and again and again.
Meanwhile Damien explained that the clips were short because the reel was goosed, but he’d still managed to rescue a fair amount. He also told us that unfortunately the audio was nonexistent.
We thanked Damien for his expertise and he gave us a pen drive containing all of the files.
“Hope you boys don’t mind,” he said before we left his store. “I’ll show these clips to my old man and see if he has any leads for you.”
We thanked him again and headed back to the hotel.
Later that day we discovered that the journal we’d recovered contained notes for the reel. This allowed us to make some sense out of the clips which you’ll now find scattered amongst the chapters.
What we’re beginning to learn is that this project is leading us in bizarre directions. Please check back regularly for updates.
